Student Bloomin Air events
The Lakeland Arts Association is offering three FREE plein air events for students aged 12 - 18.
Plein Air painting means going outside and painting what you see - landscapes, nature, even street scenes - but you are THERE and creating what you see in front of you.
These activities are designed to provide an introductory plein air experience for interested students. Each activity will have a short general lesson on painting and then students will be encouraged to find a place to paint.
This will be done “paint out style”. That means after the little lesson, students will paint an area that they enjoy. They will be given two small canvas boards to work on. They do not have to complete them both. They will have two hours to paint and return to the meeting place to show off their pieces. If they wish to submit them for judging, they can. Prizes will be awarded as follows:
1st - $50
2nd - $25
3rd - $15
There are three dates - January 24, February 7, and February 21. Each event will run from 10 - 1. You need to arrive 15 minutes before the event for registration check in.
RULES:
Students aged 12 - 15 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Adults may choose to paint along with their student but cannot enter the competition. Unaccompanied students under age 16 will not be allowed to participate.
Students will need to wear sunscreen and bring water. They may bring snacks as desired. There will be no food available as part of this event.
Students may wish to bring a camp chair to sit in.
Students will be provided with (2) 5 X 7 canvas boards, a palette with acrylic paint, and brushes. If they wish to use another media, such as colored pencil - they will need to provide it.
Students at all times should be with their parent, another student, or in view of the Lakeland Arts Association personnel to ensure their wellbeing.
Students may enter all three events if they wish.
These events are intended to prepare students to compete at the Bloomin Air Paint Out in Bartow - part of the Bloomin’ Arts Festival. Students do not have to compete in Bloomin’ Air, but attending at least one of these events means they can get a scholarship to compete in Bloomin’ Air on March 8th. That event has a student prize package of $225 awarded as follows :
1st - $100
2nd - $75
3rd - $50
We hope that you will join us as we share our love of plein air painting. If you have any questions, please contact Danielle.
This program is offered as part of a grant provided by Visit Central Florida.
