LaTonya Hicks Mixed Media Sculpture Workshop

from $100.00

Course Description:

In this exploratory Sculptural Mixed Media Weaving class, participants will experiment with a wide range of materials to create dimensional, woven-based assemblages. Our creative journey will unfold in three dynamic phases—starting in sequence, then cycling through them as needed in an iterative process.

Phase 1: Ideation
We begin with a conversation—sharing meaningful objects, personal stories, and visual inspiration. You'll have time to explore and "shop" through my curated collection of materials (aka the dragon's hoard!), sketch ideas, and plan your sculptural weaving.

Phase 2: Construction
This is the build phase. Using a sturdy substrate as our base, we’ll weave, wrap, knot, and layer materials. Demos will include techniques using wire, armature, aluminum, clay, yarn, fabric, and Poly-Fil to add volume and structure. This is the "how-to" and “go-do” stage where ideas take form.

Phase 3: Embellishment & Refinement
Now we refine the surface—adding detail, texture, and personal meaning. We'll explore embellishment through stitching, layering, wrapping, or embedding found and personal objects into the weaving structure.

The creative process is cyclical—you’ll naturally move back and forth between phases as your piece evolves.

You're encouraged to bring materials or objects of personal significance to inspire your work, embed in your weaving, or use as sculptural elements. Otherwise, all materials will be supplied.
